Spooner House Food Drive Surpasses Goals

CONTRIBUTEDIn spite of the frigid weekend temperatures, the 15th annual Valley Has a Heart Spooner House food collection drive Saturday (March 4) surpassed its fundraising goal by more than $1,000.

More than 5,000 food items were also collected. This time of year, more food is always needed, especially when the temperatures drop as they did last weekend.

White Hills Fire Company Thanks Residents For Generosity

Mike Kellett, a member of Shelton’s White Hills Fire Company and Toys 4 Kids coordinator for the group, sent the Valley Indy the following email and pictures Tuesday:

Attached are a few photos of Santa and his smoke-eating elves along with the toys that were collected for Toys 4 Kids by White Hills Fire Company. Please share White Hills Fire Company’s most sincere thanks with your readers for their generosity.

Because of their overwhelming support we had more toys that the van could handle.

Ansonia Cop Gets National Praise After Viral Photo

Ansonia Police Officer Michael Castillo is getting national attention after a citizen spotted him giving a group of kids some help last week.

Last week Faith Bisson Taylor spotted Castillo helping a child fix his bike in front of the Target on West Main Street and snapped a picture she posted to the police department’s Facebook page.

As of Aug. 4 the photo has been liked by nearly 1,400 people and shared 394 times.

Eric Hicks Breaks 54-Year-Old Derby High Jump Record

“I almost hung up on him. I thought someone was playing a joke,” said Bishop, 71.

‘Shop With A Cop’ Included Derby And Shelton Police Officers

Back To School Rally Sunday In Ansonia

A group of city parents hopes to give away 500 free backpacks during a back to school rally slated for Sunday, Aug. 24 at Gatison Park on Fourth Street.

The event, sponsored by Ansonia’s Save Our Youth, a volunteer group, will feature an all-ages basketball tournament, live DJs and a ton of other family-friendly events.

It’s the rally’s second year, said Iris Carotenuto, an Ansonia mom of two.

Derby Church Hosts 5K Run-Walk To Benefit Derby Public Schools

Derby’s Tommy Abel Takes First Place In Citi Field Competition

Derby LL FacebookDerby Little League’s Thomas Abel came in first place in the Team Championship of Major League Baseball’s Pitch, Hit & Run competition on Saturday, June 14 a Citi Field, home of the New York Mets.

Abel competed in the 11-12-year-old division with other sectional champions from New York and New Jersey.
