Cops Review Videos In Wakelee Avenue Shooting

Ansonia police are reviewing surveillance footage from a fatal shooting on Wakelee Avenue Wednesday night.

No one has been arrested in connection to the killing of Isaia Hernandez, 25.

Lt. Wayne Williams Monday said detectives continue to work around the clock — including this past weekend — on the investigation.

As police follow up leads, they are looking at footage from the gas station’s convenience store security cameras, as well as footage from area businesses that might have picked up some details that could help the investigation.

“We are looking at all aspects of the case,” Williams said Monday. “We’re really putting in a lot of man-hours on this.”

Police are also trying to determine if Wednesday’s shooting is connected to another fatal shooting just a week before.

On March 9, Daryl Rhys Venson, 25, was gunned down outside the GQ Food Mart on the corner of Root Avenue and Hill Street.

Both men were Ansonia residents.

Police Chief Kevin Hale said the shootings were not random, but stopped short of saying whether the two crimes are related.

“It’s apparent to us that the victims and the assailants knew one another in both cases,” Hale said.

Williams said police are still asking anyone with information to contact detectives at (203) 735-1885. Callers can remain anonymous, Williams said.

“We are following up leads on both homicides,” Williams said. “We are encouraging people with information to contact us.”

Isaia Hernandez

Hernandez was in a car with the suspects before he was shot, police said. Hernandez was driving the car, which belonged to a member of his family, Williams said.

Police and state police have searched the car and are waiting for results on evidence samples to gain more information about what occurred inside, Williams said.

After being shot, Hernandez stumbled toward the gas pumps at the station, where he collapsed. He was pronounced dead an hour later at Griffin Hospital, police said.

Two men, who were in the car with him right before the shooting, fled the scene on foot.

The shooting happened in daylight, when several children and residents were outside. There were people at the gas station at the time.

“It’s frightening, unnerving certainly,” Hale said. “But again, these were not random acts.”

A memorial for Hernandez has been set up on a utility pole at the corner of Church Street and Wakelee Avenue.

Monday afternoon, three men visited the memorial — one wearing a shirt that said “RIP ‘Ike’” on the front.

The men declined to comment or identify themselves, other than to say they knew Hernandez.

Teddy bears, flowers and balloons were tied to the utility pole, and personal messages to Hernandez were written on a poster.

“R.I.P. Aik, from Angel. Much love. We’ll miss you,” one line on the poster read.
