Klarides to DMV Honcho: What Are You Doing About the Backlog?

NOTE: The following letter from state Rep. Themis Klarides to the commissioner of the state DMV was copied to the media July 22.

Dear Commissioner Ayala,

Recent news reports have chronicled the ongoing problems in scheduling tests for driving permits and licenses throughout the department system.

Additionally, our office has been deluged with questions and complaints from constituents — frustrated parents and young people — who have been attempting to make appointments.

I understand the challenges in attempting to serve a much larger pool of clients.

However our constituents are now telling us that in many instances they have been unable to obtain basic information through their branch offices and have found it difficult to get through to DMV employees.

Several questions come to mind. What is being done to address the backlog of license and permit applicants and what steps can be taken to speed up the response time to those trying to communicate with DMV personnel?

I appreciate your attention to these matters and await your responses.

Sincerely,
Themis Klarides
