New Podcast ‘Valley Sports Rewind’ Launches Thursday

Valley Sports Rewind,’ a new weekly podcast from the Valley Indy, launches Thursday, July 28.

Host Mike Cannici will interview past players, coaches, broadcasters and fans from the Naugatuck Valley athletic scene.

New episodes are scheduled to be released every Thursday.

The Valley Indy put out a call for a Valley talk show about six months ago. Cannici, who played an important role in the newly-created Derby High School Athletic Hall of Fame, approached the Indy with his idea for a show that pays tribute to past glories.

We want to capture the great moments that happened in Valley sports,” Cannici says in the intro to the first episode. This is a great community … We want to relive, rewind and replay.”

Cannici also hosts Hometown Heroes,” a local sports talk show on Comcast’s channel 10.

While the overall mission is to look back, the show won’t paint itself into a corner. Cannici is planning episodes that concentrate on wider sports-related topics.

As of July, five Valley Sports Rewind episodes have been recorded.

Rob Hyder, a player on the Derby High School 1990 state championship football team, is the podcast’s first guest.

Here’s a quick preview of the first episode. While the preview below is a video captured on an iPhone, keep in mind Valley Sports Rewind” is an audio podcast.

The show will post Thursday (July 28) on ValleyIndy.org, along with the Valley’s Indy’s associated YouTube, Soundcloud and iTunes pages.

Valley Sports Rewind” joins Valley Navel Gazing” on the Valley Indy podcast roster. Both are recorded and edited in Ansonia.

Navel Gazing” is a weekly local news talk show — the only one of its kind dedicated to the lower Valley. The show previously won a first-place award for audio storytelling from the Connecticut Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

In addition to the web, Navel Gazing” is heard every Monday morning at about 9 a.m. on 103.5 WNHH, New Haven’s community radio station.
