Alderman DiMartino Takes The Oath In Derby

Joseph DiMartino is officially back on the Derby Board of Aldermen.

Mayor Anita Dugatto administered the oath of office to DiMartino Thursday (Dec. 18) and the new Second Ward Aldermen took his seat at the big table.

DiMartino’s daughter, one of his daughter’s friends and his father-in-law were in attendance.

DiMartino, Republican, replaces David Lenart, also a Republican, who stepped down from the board because of time constraints.

DiMartino is the greatest pinch hitter in the recent history of Derby politics.

This is DiMartino’s third time on the city’s legislative body.

He was elected in 2009, served one term, and was appointed again in 2012 when Second Ward Alderman James Benanto stepped down.

Just prior to Thursday’s meeting, Dugatto searched to see if she could find DiMartino’s old name plate to display on the table where he sits.

The search came up empty.

He probably took it with him when he left,” quipped Barbara DeGennaro, president of the Derby Board of Aldermen.

Sure enough, as DiMartino took his seat after taking the oath, he pulled his name plate out.

I did. I’m very proud of it,” he said to DeGennaro.

Saving us money already, Joe,” said Alderman Carmen DiCenso.

The Aldermen also voted unanimously to grant a waiver to serve on the board. One was needed because DiMartino works for the city’s Department of Public Works.
