Ammo Found Behind Derby School

The morning drop off routine at the Irving School in Derby was disrupted Wednesday after ammunition was found behind the school.

Police are investigating.

Four bullets were found behind a trailer by a custodian.

Because of the ammo’s physical condition — the bullets looked weathered — police believe the items had been there for a few weeks. They were bullets for a handgun, police said.

The incident does not appear to be connected to any type of threat to the school, as none were received.

The ammo was found at 8 a.m. and school returned to normal at 8:45 a.m. after a precautionary search, according to a message from Derby Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway.

Students were not in danger, the superintendent said.

Conway sent the following email:

This morning at 8:00 AM it was reported that ammunition was discovered behind Irving school. Police were contacted immediately. Irving buses were temporally rerouted to the High School parking lot until police could determine the building was safe. Parents driving students were asked to wait to drop students off.

At 8:45 AM police determine the building was safe and buses were rerouted to Irving.

At no time were students or staff’s safety in jeopardy.

All activity returned to normal at 8:45 AM.”

The Irving School is on Garden Place.

Principal Jennifer Olson also sent a message to parents explaining what happened.

She pointed out the school had technical problems with their notification system, and that they’ve contacted the company to figure out what happened.

Olson’s message is posted below:

This is Mrs. Olson calling with some important information for you about an incident that occurred at Irving School.

This morning shortly after 8:00 AM it was reported that a potential security issue was discovered behind Irving school. Police were contacted immediately. Out of an abundance of caution, we did not have students enter the building and the Irving school buses were temporally rerouted to the High School parking lot until police could determine the building was safe.

At 8:45 AM police determine the building was safe and buses were rerouted to Irving and school began as scheduled.

At no time were students or staff’s safety in jeopardy.

All activities returned to normal at 8:45 AM.

In the process of making an initial notification through school messenger to parents we experienced technical difficulties with our system. We are working with School Messenger to determine why this happened. New apologize for any delay in our notification.”
