Ansonia Cops Charge Two After Drug Raid

Ansonia police arrested two people on narcotics charges last month after early morning raids of two downtown apartments.

Arrested were:

  • James Burnes, 58, charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics with intent to sell, possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a housing project, tampering with evidence, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, and risk of injury to a minor.
  • Malcolm Carpenter, 50, charged with possession of narcotics and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both men are residents of apartments at 232 Main St., which police raided Nov. 21 about 5 a.m. after obtaining search warrants for the residences, according to a prepared statement from Lt. Andrew Cota.

These search warrants were the results of undercover narcotics investigations and reports of illegal activity emanating from these apartments,” Cota’s statement said.

The raid was conducted by members of the police department’s Anti-Crime Unit, with the assistance of the Southwest Regional Tactical Team and members of the Detective and Patrol Division.

Cota said cops found powdered cocaine and drug paraphernalia in Carpenter’s apartment.

When cops raided Burnes’ apartment, Cota said, he was allegedly trying to flush some of the drugs there down his toilet, prompting the evidence tampering charge.

Cops found crack cocaine and marijuana there. A child was living in the apartment as well, police said.

Burnes was released on a $10,000 bond and is next scheduled to appear in the case at Superior Court in Derby Jan. 9.

Carpenter was released on a $5,000 bond and is also scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby Jan. 9.
