Ansonia Has A New Police Dog

CONTRIBUTEDAnsonia police announced Thursday that the department has a new police dog, a German Shepherd named Kane.

The one-and-a-half-year-old dog will begin 12 weeks of training in handler protection and narcotics detection” beginning May 25, police said.

Officer Paul Smith has been selected has Kane’s handler. Smith has been with Ansonia police since March 2003.

The department bought Kane from Dietrick Nuehmar of Derby.

We are pleased to add Kane to the police force and expect to be able to use him for tracking purposes and narcotics investigations after he has completed his training,” Lt. Andrew Cota said in a prepared statement.

Kane will be on patrol duties in the late summer, Cota’s statement said.

Ansonia’s prior police dog, Thor, retired last June after nine years of service and responding to more than 10,000 calls with his handler, Officer Steven Martins.
