Ansonia Man Faces Gun, Drug Charges After Chase

Ansonia police arrested a South Street man Friday after they said he eluded officers trying to stop his car.

A prepared statement issued Monday by police spokesman Lt. Andrew Cota said that on Friday officers saw 21-year-old Howard Rumley, who was known to be operating a motor vehicle without a license,” and tried to stop him in the area of South Street.

Rumley fled, Cota’s statement said.

The operator engaged in a police pursuit in the area of Central Street and Beaver Street,” Cota said. The vehicle continued to elude police and continued the pursuit onto North Main Street. Officers lost contact with the vehicle and suspended the pursuit.”

However, a short time later, Rumley was seen entering a vehicle on Beaver Street. Police stopped the vehicle and took Rumley into custody.

Police allege they found drugs on him.

While the male was being searched officers located suspected heroin and crack cocaine on the suspect,” Cota said. Officers also located a stolen 9mm handgun on the suspect. The suspect was transported to police headquarters.”

Police allege the gun was reported stolen from a residence in Ansonia on Sept. 2.

A total of 8.4 grams of crack cocaine and 9 wax folders containing heroin were seized from Rumley, he said.

A woman and her two small children were with Rumley but were released at the scene, Cota said. 

Rumley was charged with:

  • Engaging police in pursuit
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving without a license
  • Two counts of failure to obey a traffic signal
  • Three counts of failure to obey a stop sign
  • Two counts of possession of narcotics
  • Two counts of possession of narcotics with intent to sell
  • Two counts of possession of narcotics with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a daycare
  • Criminal possession of a firearm
  • Carrying a pistol without a permit
  • Theft of a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle
  • Two counts of risk of injury to a minor

Rumley was held on $500,000 and was scheduled to be arraigned Oct. 20 at Superior Court in Derby, police said.
