A 24-year-old Derby man was part of a pair arrested on a string of drug charges after state police pulled over a car in Orange.

Jonathan Brito of Summit Street is charged with: conspiracy to commit possession of cocaine with intent to sell, possession of cocaine within 1,500 feet of a school or daycare, possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of marijuana, and two counts of possession of untaxed marijuana.

Six of those charges are felonies.

Police said Brito was a passenger in an 2004 Acura TSX being driven by Jocelyn Nyas Serrano-Rivera at about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when state police stopped the car on Route 114 near New Haven Avenue for a traffic violation.

After approaching the car, troopers alleged they could smell marijuana. A dog trained to sniff out drugs was called to the scene.

Troopers said they found more than a pound of marijuana, a half kilo of cocaine, and about $2,500 cash.

Serrano-Rivera, 20 from Hamden, faces the same charges as Brito — in addition to receiving a ticket for speeding.

Both people are due in court Feb. 27.
