Building Collapse Reported In Shelton

An unoccupied portion of a Shelton building collapsed into the Housatonic River Tuesday (May 29), according to Shelton police.

No injuries were reported.

In a prepared statement, Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said the collapse was reported about 12:20 p.m. at 281 Canal St.

A section of the rear of the building collapsed and fell into the river,” Kozlowsky said. Nobody was inside the building at the time of the collapse.”

Police and firefighters responded.

The Fire Marshal and the Shelton Building Inspector arrived on scene and are evaluating the building,” Kozlowsky said. DEEP was also notified.”

A picture posted to the police department’s Facebook account shows the collapse.

The building is at the end of Canal Street and is owned by John Watts, a Norwalk investor who owns several properties in the city’s downtown redevelopment zone.

According to radio transmissions, auto parts and related material were in the building, some of which went into the river.

The property which has hosted a number of businesses throughout the years, including Charter Arms, which moved to nearby Brewster Lane in 2012.

The city received a grant last year to investigate environmental contamination at the site.
