Bus Driver Gets Verbal Warning After Crash

A bus driver last week didn’t see a car because of a snow bank and pulled into its path, according to an accident report released by Shelton police March 2.

The bus driver received a warning for failing to grant the right of way.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Shelton Avenue and Wooster Street about 7:08 a.m. Feb. 24, according to a report written by Officer Richard Bailey.

None of the 37 high school students on the bus complained of injuries at the scene, though seven were later sent home from school for treatment of headaches, bumps, and muscle strains,” the school superintendent said.

According to the report, the bus driver, Lamar Hodge, 34, of Derby, was driving the bus down Wooster Street and making a left onto Shelton Avenue at the time of the accident.

(Hodge) stated that he stopped at the stop sign on Wooster Street,” the report says. That he went to make a left turn, westbound onto Shelton Ave. That the turn is very tight. That there was a large snow pile and had to drive slowly to go over it safely. That the bus was struck in the left side by vehicle #2.”

The second vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, was driven by William Coleman, 32, of Shelton. Coleman said he noticed the school bus turning out of Wooster Street and tried to slow to a stop, but was unable to before hitting the bus.

The bus sustained minor damage to its side. Coleman’s Corolla was towed from the scene.
