Car Slides Off Road Into Icy Brook In Shelton

CONTRIBUTEDA car slid off of Walnut Tree Hill Road in Shelton Wednesday (Jan. 28) morning and into an icy brook.

The man driving the car was able to get out of the vehicle, Shelton Fire Department Chief Fran Jones said. The driver wasn’t hurt.

The accident occurred about 7 a.m. in the area of Walnut Tree Hill Road’s intersection with Sawmill City Road.

The gentleman driving the vehicle was coming eastbound down Walnut Tree and slid around the corner and into the water there,” Jones said.

The driver’s name wasn’t available.

Firefighters were happy to see the man get out of the car unharmed, Jones said — but still had to deal with the matter of a Volvo sedan in three feet of icy water.

Daniel Tatum and Nick Demko, two firefighters from the White Hills Voluntary Fire Co. #5, donned cold water gear and eased down the embankment, with ropes attached to their suits held by other firefighters on the road.

All four of the fire department’s companies do training for cold water emergencies” to prepare for incidents like Wednesday’s, Jones said.

Fortunately, Tatum and Demko didn’t have to rescue any people from the frigid water Wednesday.

But they did have to wade through about three feet of ice water to help AJ Towing lift the vehicle out of the brook, then retrieve some parts from the car’s exhaust which had broken off the vehicle in the crash.
