Center Stage Announces Auditions For ‘Mother Hicks’

Center Stage Theatre director Gary Scarpa has announced the theatre will hold auditions for the award winning play, Mother Hicks,” on Sunday, Aug. 23 between 10 a.m. and noon.

We are seeking experienced and inexperienced actors of all ages,” Scarpa said. There are roles for adults, teens, and children.”

Mother Hicks is an evocative story, richly realized through all of the resources of theatre including poetry, character and story. The setting includes various locations in and around Ware, Illinois, in the late spring of 1935 during the Great Depression.

This play is about three outsiders — a foundling girl known only as Girl; a deaf boy, eloquent in the language of his silence; and an eccentric recluse, Mother Hicks, who is suspected of being a witch. The tale, told with poetry and sign language, chronicles the journeys of these three to find themselves, and each other, in a troubled time.

Center Stage Theatre is a non-profit organization, founded in 2005 by directors Gary and Francesca Scarpa. The theatre presents a full season of five productions, using age appropriate casting. Center Stage’s purpose is to enhance the cultural environment within its community; to present high quality theatrical productions at affordable prices; to encourage growth and education through the performing arts; and to provide a means for interested adults, teens and children to experience and participate in various aspects of live theater.

Candidates will be given a scene from the play to read. For further information about the production and roles, visit www.centerstageshelton.org. Center Stage is located at 54 Grove St. in Shelton.
