Derby Historical Society To Honor Dan Waleski

The public is invited to attend the Derby Historical Society’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the Christ Episcopal Church, 56 South Cliff Street, Ansonia.

This year, the Society is thrilled to present the Dorothy Larson Award to Derby’s Dan Waleski.

Each year, the award is given to a Valley resident for his or her many contributions to the community which coincide with the mission of the Derby Historical Society, which is to preserve, protect, and honor our cultural and traditional values.

Many people will recognize Dan as a dedicated community member. He is known for his interest in local civic affairs and for his attendance at many city meetings where he has often testified at public hearings.

Because of his faithful attendance at events promoting the Sterling Opera House, he was named as one of the five committee members charged by the City with drawing up by-laws for a nonprofit corporation to manage a reopened Sterling Opera House. For two years he met with the other members twice a month to research and draw up by-laws for the proposed corporation.

In 2011 he was honored by being named Derby Citizen of the Year by the Mayor of Derby. He is a lifetime member of the Derby Historical Society and attends many of its programs.

Following the regular meeting, enjoy “An Afternoon with First Lady Dolley Madison,” a living history presentation by Carolyn Ivanoff. Mrs. Madison will speak about the founding of our nation, her husband James Madison’s role as the Father of the American Constitution, and the War of 1812.

The Derby Historical Society is a regional non-profit historical society serving the area composed of and influenced by the original Township of Derby established in 1675: Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton. Its purpose is to foster and promote study, discussion and interest in the history of this area, as well as to discover and collect any property or material that may preserve, establish and/or illustrate this history.

The Derby Historical Society welcomes all visitors and is also available to support researchers, school or other program needs. Our staff offices are located at the Sarah Riggs Humpreys House, 37 Elm Street, Ansonia, CT. The David Humpreys House and gift shop are open year-round Monday through Friday, 1PM – 4PM and the third Saturday of each month, 11AM – 2PM.
