Derby Police Check Report Of Shots Fired In the Area Of Anson Street

Outdoor activities at the Irving School in Derby were suspended briefly Monday morning as police investigated a report of shots fired in the area of Anson Street.

There were no injuries and no evidence that shots were actually fired, Derby police said.

The police department received a call at about 9:51 a.m. from someone saying they heard gunshots.

Police responded and searched the area.

Patrol and detectives canvassed the area. However, they were unable to locate anyone with information,” according to an email from Lt. Sal Frosceno, the department’s spokesman.

No evidence could be located,” Frosceno said.

Anson Street is a half-mile away from the Irving School (on Garden Place) and the St. Michael-St. Mary School (across the street from Irving).

At about 12:20 p.m., Irving School principal Jennifer Olson sent a message to parents via a robocall telling them what happened.

Olson’s message said police notified the school of the incident as it happened, and that police were looking for an individual.

Out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to suspend all outdoor activities and restrict staff and visitor access to the building,” Olson said in the message.

Less than an hour later, school officials were told the police department had resumed normal activities.”

I am informing you of the steps taken today so you are aware of the circumstances and to provide clear communication to parents,” Olson said in the message. At no time were there any safety concerns for our students or school staff.”

Police responded to a similar report on Anson Street the night of Dec. 10.

In that incident, police swarmed the street after a report of shots fired, but neither bullet holes or wounded people were found.
