Driver Plows Into Gas Pump, Takes Off

A speeding Mercedes flying along Pershing Drive Wednesday night lost control, hit a curb and then plowed into a Mobil gas pump at the intersection of Pershing and Division in Derby.

Despite the car looking like it had been in a demolition derby, the driver backed away from the wreckage and proceeded to take off up the Division Street hill, toward Griffin Hospital.

There were no injuries reported, nor was there a major gas spill.

The crash happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday and left the Derby Central Mobil with some $25,000 in damage, according to owner/manager Munawar Choudhry.

Choudhry hopes publicizing the incident will bring the driver to justice. The pumps at his station were only about a year old, and he’s got insurance paperwork to file.

Choudhry wasn’t there, but an employee relayed the details.

The guy was coming from the highway, right from Route 8. He was going so fast, probably 50 miles per hour. He tried to cut through traffic and hit the curb,” Choudhry said.

He believes there were two men — one black, one white — in the Mercedes.

A customer tried to get into his vehicle to chase the evading driver.

But by the time he got in his car he had disappeared up Division Street,” Choudhry said.

Choudhry said he’s specifically hoping he can get a license plate from the Mercedes to help with his insurance claim. There are security cameras on site.

Anyone with information on the wreck should call Derby police at 203 735 7811.
