When a devastating flood swept through the Naugatuck Valley in 1955, Edward Cotter was there with his camera, shooting photos of the devastation for the Evening Sentinel.

Several months later, the newspaper put out a picture book, drawing heavily from Cotter’s photographs, and photos from other area journalists.

Cotter died Saturday. He was 91.

The book — “A pictoral history of the floods of Aug. 19, 1955 and Oct. 15, 1955 in the lower Naugatuck valley of Connecticut” — was published by the Evening Sentinel on Dec. 15, 1955.

The photos here are some of Cotter’s photos that appeared in the book. Click here for Cotter’s obituary.

They were scanned by Valley Indy reporter Jodie Mozdzer as part of her graduate research into the flood.
