The aptly-named team of five students at Emmett O’Brien Technical High School in Ansonia came out on top Oct. 31 in the school’s annual volleyball tournament.

The tournament was the culmination of Emmett O’Brien Goes Pink activities held throughout October. The school raised $1,825 for The Hewitt Center for Breast Wellness at Griffin Hospital in Derby.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

O’Brien Principal Laurie LeBouthillier was pleased with the amount of money raised.

We had a total of 18 teams,” she said. The support from the whole school community was incredible. Everyone looks forward to participating in this worthy cause each year and we hope to continue it next year.”

A majority of the students and staff wore pink T‑shirts, featuring an awareness ribbon logo designed by senior Gabe DeSanti of Shelton. DeSanti is in the computer-aided drafting and design department.

He said he hand-sketched the design before he transferred it to the computer.

The students sold more than 200 shirts at $8 apiece, DeSanti said, and they also sold buttons to raise money.

DeSanti, president of the National Honor Society, coordinated the fund-raising with National Honor Society member and senior Melissa Millette of Naugatuck. We had more participation this year than we ever had,” she said.

The Winners team consisted of Sophia Haack, Anthony DeCampos, Vinny Provenzano, Giya Perrin, and Rachel Krystopowicz.

After the game freshman Lindsay Sigetti of Naugatuck said, It was exciting to see everyone try. They worked well together.”
