Update: Tragic Accident In Derby Claims Man’s Life

The man who died Monday afternoon at 36 Commerce St. in Derby has been identified as Glenn Far, of Shelton.

He was 58 years old. Far owned GFW Welding Company, which was housed within the building where emergency responders were sent Monday at 3:47 p.m. after receiving a report of a man trapped under a snow plow attachment.

An autopsy at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the death was accidental, caused by traumatic asphyxia, chest compression.”

Derby detectives and officials from the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident.

Derby police said they are treating the incident as an untimely death.

There is no evidence at the scene to suggest intervening criminal conduct,” Lt. Sal Frosceno said in a press release.

Far, a welder, was working on the plow when it fell on him.

The original post from Monday evening follows:

Derby police and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating a fatality that occurred within a Commerce Street commercial garage Monday afternoon.

The investigation was active as of 6:30 p.m.

A man died inside a large garage-type structure at 36 Commerce St., next to the Dunkin Donuts on Route 34. The initial emergency radio dispatches indicated the person was injured by a snow plow. He was declared dead at the scene at 3:57 p.m.

Tax records show the building is owned by Frank Pepe, of F. Pepe Construction, and Glenn W. Far.

Frank Pepe arrived about 5 p.m.

After talking to police, Pepe made his way over to police tape that cordoned off the road to console a distraught teenage girl and a woman who accompanied her.

It was a somber scene. A steady stream of vehicles carrying local contractors who knew the man arrived on Commerce Street between 4:45 p.m. and 6 p.m.

It is unclear which company the man worked for, as more than one local business uses the garage.

OSHA spokesman Ted Fitzgerald confirmed OSHA was on the scene but couldn’t elaborate.

OSHAs Bridgeport office sent an inspector to the scene this afternoon. The inspection will look to see if there were any workplace safety violations in connection with this incident. That’s all the info I have,” he said via e‑mail Monday evening.
