Firefighters Search River For Reported Suicidal Woman

Photo: Eugene DriscollBoats and all-terrain vehicles with firefighters from Derby, Shelton and Stratford searched the Housatonic River and its banks Monday after a report of a suicidal woman.

The call was declared unfounded at about 8 p.m., with police and all firefighters clearing the scene.

Firefighters reported Tuesday the woman was found safe elsewhere.

Derby police sent Derby Storm Ambulance and Engine Co. to the river at about 6 p.m.

A family member told police the woman was considering committing suicide and was heading toward the river in Derby.

Firefighters searched the Housatonic River from about Indian Head Rock in Shelton all the way to Stratford using four boat launches in Derby and Shelton, along with boats from the Stratford department further down the river.

Firefighters also searched part of the Naugatuck River, which meets the Housatonic at O’Sullivan’s Island under the Route 8 bridge connecting Derby to Shelton.

With no actual person found either on the shore or in the water after the search, the incident was deemed unsubstantiated and firefighters left.
