Derby’s the place to be Oct. 22, with two Halloween-events happening.
The Valley Arts Council is sponsoring the “Ultimate Jack O’ Lantern Carving Contest.”
“Let your imagination and creativity flow,” said Rich DiCarlo, the Valley Arts Council’s spooky guru. “Anything goes!”
Your carved pumpkin(s) should be dropped off at the Derby Green between Elizabeth Street and Minerva between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
There is a $5 entry fee per entry.
“Enter as many times as you would like,” DiCarlo said.
The best pumpkin will receive a cash prize.
“Winner takes all,” said a maniacal DiCarlo.
Net funds from the event benefit The Valley Arts Council’s Children’s programs
After the pumpkin carving madness, grab a bite to eat in Derby then report back to the Derby Green for a “Haunted Lantern Tour.”
The first tour kicks off at 8 p.m. They continue until 11 p.m.
“Learn about the history and the mystery behind some of Derby’s famous haunts!” DiCarlo said.
The tours cost $5 per person.
Each tour is a 30-minute guided walking tour that finishes off with a brief look inside the (haunted?) Sterling Opera House. Come check the building featured on SyFy’s “Ghost Hunters!”
Net funds from the event benefit “Save Our Sterling,” a group raising money to restore the interior of the building.
