Great Give Hopes To Raise More Than $1 Million For Local Nonprofit Groups

The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is excited to announce The Great Give 2018, The Community Foundation’s ninth community-wide online giving event that raises funds for local nonprofits serving the 20-town region spanning Greater New Haven and the Valley.

Over a 36-hour period starting at 8:00 a.m. on May 1 and ending at 8:00 p.m. on May 2, gifts made to over 480 participating nonprofits will be eligible for more than $240,000 in matching funds and prizes. 

Grand prizes ranging from $15,000 to $1,500 will be awarded to the nonprofits that attract the greatest number of unique donors; get the greatest number of new donors; raise the most money; many more prizes will be given out hourly. Gifts made during The Great Give® on www.thegreatgive.org will be matched on a pro-rated basis with funds provided by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the creator of the event, and its partner in philanthropy the Valley Community Foundation. As in years past, the Valley Community Foundation, the event’s second largest sponsor, has committed $25,000 in matching funds and prizes.

New this year, in recognition of the 90th anniversary of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, a $9,000 prize will be awarded to the participating nonprofit with the greatest number of donors in the 90 minutes from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on May 1.

New sponsors in 2018 include: BAD SONS Beer Company, Bank of America Charitable Foundation, Key Bank Foundation and Newtown Savings Bank.

The BAD SONS Charity Tap Happy Hour Prize will be awarded to the Valley organization with the greatest number of donors between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on May 2.

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation is providing a matching pool of $10,000 for all donations by donors to participating performing arts organizations.

Key Bank Foundation is providing a matching pool of $5,000 for all donations by donors to selected organizations that help women and children thrive.

Newtown Savings Bank is harnessing the power of local, and is providing a matching pool of $5,000 for all donations by donors to selected organizations located in Hamden, North Haven or Wallingford.

Returning sponsors of the event include Alexion Pharmaceuticals and Liberty Bank Foundation.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals is offering two $2,500 prizes based on the number of unique donors; both are to benefit New Haven-based nonprofits. The first will be awarded to a nonprofit working in Education and the second to a nonprofit working in Health & Wellness.

Liberty Bank Foundation is offering three prizes totally $5,000. A $3,000 prize to the organization (not based in the Valley) working in Housing and Homelessness with the greatest number of unique donors between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on May 2. 

A $1,000 prize to the Valley organization working in Basic Needs with the greatest number of unique donors between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on May 2. And a $1000 prize to the Valley organization working in Youth or Education with the greatest number of unique donors between 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on May 2.

In addition, The Konopacke Fund of The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven is providing a matching pool of $10,000 to inspire giving to independent, nonprofit animal shelters serving the region.

The Great Give® is the annual online giving event through giveGreater.org®, a local resource for learning and giving created in 2010 by The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven to increase philanthropy in the Greater New Haven region of South Central Connecticut. 

Since its beginning, giveGreater.org® has distributed more than $6 Million to local nonprofits as a result of direct contributions on the site and giving day challenges.
