Guest Column: Shop Local, Remember The Neediest

Small Business Saturday — celebrated last month — is a day to promote shopping at local small businesses. While it’s encouraging to see one day devoted to local entrepreneurs, it’s important to remember that small businesses drive our local economy year-round. There are so many reasons to shop local — support a neighbor’s store, purchase handmade products unique to our area, not to mention save on gas by traveling locally.

You can even make a day of it by visiting the local coffee shop, stopping by one of our shopping plazas in town and dining at a local eatery. I encourage you to visit our small businesses, this season and every season.

While you’re purchasing gifts for your loved ones, remember those who are not as fortunate this holiday. Whether you purchase an extra gift for a toy drive or donate to your preferred charity your thoughtfulness will make a difference in the life of a child this Christmas.

Please consider picking up extra groceries, toys or coats for those that are in need this season. If you are not able to help in this way, consider volunteering your time at one of our area’s non-profit organizations. Be assured your thoughtfulness will make a difference in the life of a family who could use a nutritious meal or a warm coat this time of year.

The Valley is a caring community whose citizens are mindful of others. Having grown up in Shelton and been involved in our community, I see time and time again that the Valley is a community full of caring people and dedicated civic and non-profit organizations.

We all benefit from the value these organizations bring to our community. Below are just some of our area’s organizations that could use your help. Please call ahead to make arrangements to drop-off your donation or volunteer your time.
