Irving Students Collect More Than 3,000 Books

Fourth graders at the Irving School in Derby collected an astounding 3,158 books in two weeks as part of a book drive for the Vietnam Veterans of America.

The books will be donated to the Veterans Administration Hospital in West Haven, and veterans’ homes in West Haven, Bridgeport and Manchester.

Fourth grade teachers Edwin Croft, Holly Smith, and Frank Briganti worked on the project with students.

It was part of the school’s ongoing commitment to literacy.

In December, fourth created a commercial for the project, highlighting the eight drop-off locations in Derby.

The more than 3,000 books were collected during the last two weeks of January.

We are all pleased with the turnout of the drive and wanted to share our news with you!” Smith said in an email.

The students at Irving are brainstorming for their next community outreach project, Smith said.
