Italians Celebrate Heritage In Derby

The Sons and Daughters of Italy Valley Regional Lodge #151 in Derby held a Columbus Day celebration Sunday (Oct. 12).

The group gathered to remember the accomplishments of Columbus, born in Genoa as Cristoforo Colombo, as well as generations of immigrants of all nationalities.

On Sunday club members raised an American flag as The Star-Spangled Banner” was played, then raised an Italian flag as Italy’s national anthem, Il Canto degli Italiani,“ played.

Mayor Anita Dugatto said being Italian comes down to how you were raised, how you live your life, and the things you value.”

State Sen. Joseph Crisco was also on hand for Sunday’s ceremony, which closed with the club’s members honoring past members who built the club’s current location on High Street.
