Maintenance Work Starts On the Stevenson Bridge

FIRSTLIGHT PHOTOResidents are advised to use alternate routes as maintenance work begins on the Stevenson Bridge between Oxford and Monroe.

The work is scheduled to start on Oct. 13 and continue until Dec. 2, 2016.

It will affect traffic on Route 34, the state road that carries vehicles over the dam.

The work will require alternating one-way traffic on the bridge Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drivers are encouraged to utilize alternate routes if possible,” according to a statement released Oct. 12 from FirstLight Hydro Generating Co., the Stevenson bridge and dam owner. The company operates a hydroelectric generation station at the location.

The work on the bridge comes from recommendations issued by the state Department of Transportation.

Special Advisory

Motorists are advised to follow the posted signs and follow the directions of the uniformed police officers.

A FirstLight official told the Valley Indy in September that a contractor will be repairing and re-coating corroded girders below the metal decking on the road at the bridge’s east end. In addition, concrete beams in the bridge will be patched and repaired.

In September the company said the work would require the overnight closure of the bridge, but that is no longer scheduled, a spokesman said Oct. 12.
