John Cannizzio is sworn in as a police officer by Ansonia Mayor David Cassetti June 7.

A 34-year-old Naugatuck resident is Ansonia’s newest cop.

John Cannizzio was sworn in by Mayor David Cassetti during a police commission meeting June 7 after the commission voted unanimously to hire him.

Ansonia Police Lt. Andrew Cota said Cannizzio excelled in written tests and interviews during the hiring process.

We’re happy to have him on board,” Cota said.

The position pays about $63,000 per year.

Cota said Cannizzio will begin training in the police academy next month with a view to having him back in Ansonia by December for field training.

Next year at this time, if everything goes well, you’ll be a solo patrol officer,” Cota told Cannizzio.

Paul Heon, a police commission member who interviewed Cannizzio, said he handled it wonderfully.”

I loved your problem-solving ability,” Heon said. I think you’re going to be a wonderful addition to our police force.”

Cannizzio thanked the police commission.

I’m very honored and blessed and would love this opportunity,” he said.

Prior to law enforcement, Cannizzio worked as a counselor at the Center for Human Services, a methadone maintenance program. He also worked as a manager at the Riverdale Diner in Shelton.

He grew up in Stratford.

He said he was drawn to police work because members of his family have worked in law enforcement.

It’s always been something in the back of my mind,” he said.

With Cannizzio’s hire, Cota said the police department is three officers short of its full complement. He said department is evaluating several applications for the openings.
