No Changes After Derby Recount, But Another Recount Has Been Scheduled

There were no changes in the Third Ward Aldermen race after a recount that lasted about three hours in Derby City Hall Tuesday.

The winners are Democrats David Anroman, Carmen DiCenso and Republican Peter Olenoski, Jr.

The recount was held because just two votes separated Republican incumbent Richard Dziekan from Anroman and Olenoski.

In the recount, Dziekan finished in fourth place for the three spots available. He was four votes behind Olenoski.

In the recount results, Dziekan received 650 votes, one less vote than the tally sent to the Secretary of the State’s office Nov. 6.

Olenoski received 654 votes in the recount — one more vote than previously recorded.

Anroman received 657 votes in the recount — four more votes than the Election Day tally.

DiCenso received 843 votes in the recount — four more votes than the Election Day tally.

Anroman previously served on the city’s tax board. His father-in-law, Dan Foley, ran on the Democratic line against Republican Mayor Anthony Staffieri in 2009 and 2011.

Democrat Anita Dugatto defeated incumbent Staffieri Nov. 5.

Anroman, born and raised in Derby, said he’s happy to serve with Dugatto and fellow Democrats.

The numbers were close again and I have all the respect in the world for Richie Dziekan. I’m looking forward to moving on,” Anroman said.

The recount means the Democrats, as previously reported on Election Day, now hold a 7 – 2 majority on the Derby Board of Aldermen. The Dems also hold the majority of the seats on the Derby tax board and the school board, along with the mayor’s office.

However, Derby’s Town Clerk announced Tuesday another recount has been scheduled.

This one involves the Derby Board of Education, where just 12 votes separate James Stadt, a Democrat who was elected, and Denise Bottone, a Republican incumbent who was not elected.

City officials said the school board recount will take place Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m.
