No Injuries In Basement Fire At Ansonia Club

Firefighters from three towns responded to a basement fire at an Ansonia nightclub early Monday morning.

There were no injuries.

Crews were dispatched to Asylum Nightclub at 362 Main St. about 3:30 a.m. on a report of a structure fire, Ansonia Fire Department Chief Joe Kingston said at the scene about 9:30 a.m.

We determined after gaining entry that the fire was in the basement,” Kingston said.

Firefighters then used a specialized cellar nozzle” to knock down the fire through a hole in the floor, Kingston said, before getting into the basement through the back of the building and extinguishing the rest of the blaze.

Crews remained on scene well into Monday morning doing overhaul work, and Main Street was closed between Bridge and Tremont streets.

Kingston said there was no indication yet as to what caused the blaze. Fire Marshal Ray Tingley was on the scene investigating. A truck from the state fire marshal’s office was also on scene.

Kingston said the crews that responded to the fire — from Ansonia, Derby, and Seymour — halted the flames just in time.

The guys made an excellent stop,” Kingston said. Basement fires are probably the hardest fires to fight. You’re essentially going down the chimney to put the fire out.”

Kingston said the fire was confined to the basement, which suffered heavy damage. The building’s first floor had smoke and water damage, and the second floor had minor smoke damage.

My Sister’s Place, a thrift store next door to the night club, had some very minor” smoke damage, Kingston added.
