A good sense of humor, in part.

At least that was the case May 2 at OEM Controls, Inc. in Shelton, where employees surprised their boss with a party to mark the company’s 50th birthday.

As founder S. Brian Simons walked into the company’s cafeteria, he was greeted with balloons, cupcakes and a loud SURPRISE!”

I wasn’t invited but I’m glad I stopped in,” Simons said with a smile. Everybody’s here? Get back to work!” he quipped.

Simons founded OEM Controls, Inc. May 1,1966 in Westport and moved the company to Controls Drive in Shelton in 1979.

The company manufactures electrohydraulic controllers for industrial use.

Here’s a video from 2014 where Simons’ son talks about the business.

Shelton city officials and members of the business community at the party said the company’s longevity is remarkable, as it its commitment to Shelton.

Shelton Mayor Mark Lauretti said OEMs success is especially impressive given the condition of state government.

Lauretti thanked Simons and his sons, co-presidents Sam Simons and Keith Simons, for their support of Shelton High School’s robotics team.

That’s what education is supposed to about, connecting the classroom with what goes on in the community,” he said.

In a proclamation Lauretti said OEM Controls has contributed immensely to the economic vitality of our city.” He proclaimed May 2 as OEM Controls Day in the City of Shelton.

The elder Simons thanked everyone for attending and enjoying the business’ 50th celebration.

We’ve done a helluva job as a team,” he told his 190 employees.
