Police: Seymour Man Wanted To Rob Bank

A 59-year-old Seymour man was arrested Tuesday after police said he tried to rob a bank.

Mark Thomas is charged with attempted third-degree robbery, second-degree breach of peace and interfering with a police officer.

According to a prepared statement from Deputy Chief Paul Satkowski, cops received a 911 call at about 3 p.m. from the First Niagara Bank in the AutoZone plaza next to town hall.

The 911 caller said a man walked into the bank, then walked out.

However, before walking out, Thomas allegedly pulled his hoodie over his head, and extended his sleeves over his hands and fingers before touching the door to walk out.

The caller stated she thought he was acting in a manner that suggested he was planning on robbing the bank,” Satkowski’s statement said.

Thomas then walked across the parking lot toward a fire department, police said.

Cops found Thomas sitting on a wall on DeForest Street. He said he went into the bank but denied doing anything wrong, police said.

Instead, he said went in to cash a check, then realized he didn’t have his check with him.

Thomas showed cops an envelope — the one where his check was supposed to be.

But cops said a note inside the envelope read Put all the money in the bag.”

Officers then attempted to detain (Thomas) who began to struggle and pull away,” according to a prepared statement.

Police took Thomas into custody.

Thomas was also identified by a bank employee and through bank video surveillance.

Satkowski said Thomas later admitted he went in the bank in order to rob it.

Thomas was scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court July 1.
