Safety Tips From Derby FD

FILEDavid Lenart, an assistant chief of the Derby Fire Department, contacted the Valley Indy to offer the following safety tips Monday:

By doing that your helping yourself and your neighbors, God forbid there is an emergency,” Lenart said.

* Beware of furnace vents, make sure the exhaust is clear.

The new furnaces often vent outside, low to the ground, instead of up through the roof,” Lenart said. It was a problem during the blizzard two years ago. We had numerous calls where the exhaust was blocked by snow and it was backing up carbon monoxide into houses.”

  • Beware of candles

Flashlights are better than candles. Never leave a candle unattended, and keep them away from children. Don’t leave them lit when you go to sleep.”

Derby’s four firehouses will be staffed during the storm, and the firefighters are in constant contact with the police department and the city’s office of emergency management.
