Seventh Annual Cancer Walk Raises More Than $30,000

About 460 people raised more than $30,000 at the 7th Annual Griffin Hospital 5K Walk/Run to Benefit the Center for Cancer Care held earlier this month.

This was the first year the traditional October event was moved to June as a way to partner the Walk/Run with the Center for Cancer Care’s Annual Cancer Survivors Luncheon.

After the Walk/Run Griffin Hospital staff hosted the survivors’ luncheon, treating more than 150 cancer survivors and their caregivers to a picnic lunch, live music, raffles and games.

Dr. Ingrid Edshteyn, of Griffin Hospital’s Wellness for Life Program, spoke on making lifestyle changes to prevent chronic disease and cancer recurrence.

We are very grateful to all the walkers, runners, survivors and caregivers who made the change from the fall to the spring with us and made this year’s Walk/Run so successful,” said Christian Meagher, the Walk/Run director. It was wonderful to bring together two great events here at the Center for Cancer Care and have the community actively make a difference in the lives of area cancer patients.”

Proceeds from the fun, non-competitive event are earmarked for patient support programs at the Center for Cancer Care at Griffin Hospital and financial assistance for cancer patients for a variety needs, including housing, clothing and grocery bills, transportation, wigs, and salon services.

The Walk/Run was supported by the Ansonia and Derby Police departments, Storm Ambulance Corp. of Derby, and its sponsors The Ansonia Rod and Gun Club, TOMRA, Jefferson Radiology, Teamsters Local 1150, Smilow Cancer Hospital, Centrix, John Reilly, MD, Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon, Forest Construction Co., LLC, Elekta, Yale Therapeutic Radiology, Hersam Acorn, Star 99.9, Adams Super Food Store, Big Y, Bruegger’s Bagels, Duchess Restaurant, Eddy’s Bakeshop, Stop & Shop Supermarket Co., Dunkin Donuts, Wildflour Confections, BJ’s Wholesale Club, and YoCrunch.
