Seymour Plants Red Maple In Honor Of Former Tree Warden

CONTRIBUTEDSeymour Town Hall received a new red maple dedicated for passed town tree warden Keith Mitchell.

Keith Mitchell was Seymour’s volunteer tree warden for 25 years until his passing on June 17, 2012. Click here for his obituary.

Prior to being tree warden, Keith worked as a mechanic for the Department of Public Works.

The Tree Wardens Association of Connecticut donated the red maple to a location to the right of the Town Hall, where a tree had just fallen during Storm Sandy.

Each year, the Association conducts a Thanksgiving Tree Planting, a program started by Keith Mitchell himself. Members say it is only fitting that a tree be planted in his honor.

A small ceremony was held Wednesday morning where First Selectman Kurt Miller, Department of Public Works Foreman Craig Stevens, and various members of the board shared kind thoughts in honor of Keith.

Keith had been a member of the Board of Directors of the Tree Wardens Association since 2002. In 1998, the 229 acre forest off Route 188 in Seymour was dedicated as the Keith Mitchell Forest for Keith’s service to the town.
