Update: Seymour Teen Dies After Motor Scooter Crash

A 19-year-old Seymour resident died after crashing his motor scooter into a utility pole on Bungay Road Wednesday.

Police identified the driver as Philip Divincenzo, Jr.

He passed away at Yale-New Haven Hospital Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Divincenzo was traveling south on Bungay Road at about 5:45 p.m. when he lost control in the area of 144 Bungay Road and struck a utility pole on the right side of the road.

Upon impact with the pole, Divincenzo Jr. suffered serious physical injuries which are considered to be life threatening,” Seymour Police Deputy Chief Paul Satkowski said in a statement released early Thursday.

Divincenzo was wearing a helmet, but it flew off his head as he hit the pole, Satkowski said. He was operating a TaoTao Scooter.

He was helped by a crew from Seymour Ambulance, who rushed him to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, but police are still investigating. They have several witnesses who were at the scene who gave statements to police.

Whether Divincenzo needed or had a license and registration for the type of motor scooter involved in the wreck is part of the investigation, police said.
