Seymour’s First Street Now One-Way

PHOTO: JODIE GILOn Monday, May 23, 2016, First Street in downtown Seymour was made a one-way street, with traffic flowing from DeForest Street to Route 67.

Throughout the week, crews from the Department of Public Works will be relining the street accordingly, including diagonal parking that will create 11 additional parking spaces.

The decision to change the flow of traffic comes as a result of the long-standing parking shortage in the area.

Business owners, residents and visitors have all expressed the need for more parking over the past several years. Due to the landlocked nature of Seymour’s downtown, however, municipal officials were forced to get creative in order to accommodate more parking.

The Town’s engineer expects the new alignment not only to increase parking, but also to increase traffic flow during periods of heavy traffic. The change will require some adjustment but municipal officials ask for patience during the transition.
