Two Shelton cheerleading squads took national titles at the 2010 Pop Warner National competition held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida this week.
“They were crying, they were laughing. It was so exciting,” said Jenny Kelly, the cheer coordinator for Shelton Pop Warner.

Shelton’s Midget team, made up of 13 and 14-year-olds, took first place in their division. They competed against 18 other teams.

Shelton’s Pee-Wee team, made up of 10 to 12-year-olds, also took first in their division. They competed against eight other teams.

Kelly said the Midgets, who have cheered together since they were 7 years old, were especially excited for the win because it’s the last time they can compete in Pop Warner cheerleading.
This was the first year the group of girls on the Midget team have made it to national.
“They won,” Kelly said. “You can’t get better than that.”
Derby Pop Warner also sent two teams to the national competition.
The Derby Midgets — who compete in a different division than the Shelton Midgets — took second place against 14 other teams.
The Derby Pee-Wee team took fourth against 13 other squads.
In all, more than 300 cheerleading squads attended the competition.
