Shelton Robotics Team Off To Winning Start

CONTRIBUTEDThe Shelton High School Robotics team has been off to a great season so far, stacking up two district wins and currently ranked second in the New England District.

The robotics team was able to gain their first win at the NE Waterbury District competition on March 1, at Wilby High School in Waterbury.

Shelton High School Team #230, The Gaelhawks, were able to take home their first blue banner with the winning alliance help of Team #236, the Techno-Ticks from Old Lyme, and Team #3464, Sim-City from Simsbury, CT.

The competition lasted for two days with 34 teams competing, all coming from throughout Connecticut, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. The Gaelhawks were seeded second for most of the competition and were ultimately drafted by the first-seeded team #236 to join the winning alliance of the inaugural event.

The Gaelhawks were able to capture their second District win of the season at the NE Dartmouth District competition on March 14, 2015 at UMass Dartmouth in MA. Team #230 was partnered with Teams #1519, Mechanical Mayhem from Milford, NH and Team #4908, The Dragons from Duxbury, MA during the final matches to help the alliance secure their win.

CONTRIBUTEDThe competition lasted for two days consisting of 28 teams, all coming from throughout Connecticut, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Team #230 was seeded fourth for most of the competition and was ultimately drafted by the number one seeded team, Mechanical Mayhem to join their alliance along with the Dragons. In addition to winning the NE Dartmouth District competition, Team #230 was also able to win the Rockwell Automation Design in Controls Award for their robotic computer programming design.

This year’s game, Recycle Rush, requires robot alliances work together to stack plastic storage totes on top of each other and also place recycling containers on top. Teams have two minutes and thirty seconds to try and make as many stacks as possible working within the alliance. The Gaelhawks will next be competing at the NE Hartford District competition the weekend of March 27 & 28, and will be heading to the NE District Championships on April 9 at WPI with hopes of qualifying for the World Championship event in St. Louis, MO on April 22 – 25, 2015.
