Police identified the man shot and killed in last night on Root Avenue as Daryl Rhys Venson, 25, of South Cliff St.

According to a statement released Thursday morning, the case is still under investigation. Police have not determined a motive for the killing.

The Valley Indy reached out to Venson’s friends last night and this morning for comment.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place today.

According to police, they received several 911 calls at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday reporting shots fired in the area of Hill Street and Root Avenue.

Responding officers found Venson on the sidewalk. He had been shot at least once.

“If further information becomes available or suspect descriptions are obtained it will be provided,” Ansonia police Lt. Andrew Cota said in a prepared statement.

Two of Venson’s friends who gathered at the scene Wednesday night said Venson was born and raised in Ansonia and was a popular young man in the neighborhood.

Court records show he had a criminal case pending in Superior Court in Derby.

Venson had been arrested by police in August, charged with possession of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

He was out of a $10,000 bond and had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Here is our original post from Wednesday night.

A 25-year-old man was shot dead on a sidewalk outside a corner store at the intersection of Hill Street and Root Avenue Wednesday evening.

The victim was a lifelong Ansonia resident. He was shot at least once — a gunshot wound to the face.

The man’s name was not immediately available. About a dozen of his friends and family gathered at the Griffin Hospital emergency room. A friend of the family declined comment.

The shooting happened at about 7:20 p.m. on Root Avenue near the GQ Food Mart, said police spokesman Lt. Wayne Williams.

“We received several 911 calls that there was a male down in the street. The first responding officers located a 25-year-old man on Root Avenue. He had suffered at least one gunshot wound. They provided medical assistance to him at the scene,” Williams said.

He was pronounced dead at Griffin Hospital.

Detectives were at the scene as of 9:30 p.m. Other officers were conducting interviews at Griffin Hospital.

“We’re talking to some witnesses that have been cooperating, some of our 911 callers (and we’re) gathering evidence. We’re also waiting for the (State Police) Major Crime Unit to come out and give us a hand,” Williams said.

No arrests have been made. Police did not have a description of any suspects as of 9 p.m.

“We have no idea as to what the circumstances were, we are still investigating,” he said.
