A 46-year-old Stratford man died in Shelton Wednesday after he went missing while in the Housatonic River, police said.

Detectives are investigating.

In a prepared statement, Lt. Robert Kozlowsky said police received several 911 calls about 2 p.m. “reporting a male in the water who appeared to be distressed by the Sunnyside Boat Ramp.”

Police, firefighters, and EMS responded and tried to find the man in the water but were unsuccessful, Kozlowsky said.

“Personnel and dive teams from Shelton, Trumbull, Monroe, Stratford, and Fairfield arrived on scene to assist in locating the male,” Kozlowsky said. “Approximately two and a half hours into the search the male was located.”

The man was identified as Willard McDonald.

He was found in the water, Kozlowsky said.

“This incident is currently under investigation by The Shelton Police Detective Division,” Kozlowsky said. “Anyone with any information is requested to call police at (203) 924-1544.”

In an email, Kozlowsky said “there is no evidence of foul play at this point.”
