Superintendent: Shelton Student Had BB Gun At High School

An 18-year-old Shelton High School student was arrested Monday after allegedly taking a BB gun to school.

In a prepared statement, Shelton Police Detective Richard Bango said students alerted administrators at Shelton High School that the student, Destiny Ryan, was showing what appeared to be a semi-automatic handgun in the girl’s bathroom.”

Bango declined to comment on why Ryan allegedly brought the weapon to school, but said she did not threaten anyone.”

Shelton officers and detectives, who were already on scene for an unrelated matter, approached Ryan and asked her if she had a gun, which she replied she did,” Bango said. Ryan then handed officers her bookbag which contained a black BB gun which closely resembled a 9mm semi-automatic hand gun. The BB gun was loaded at the time.”

The officers arrested Ryan and charged her with possession of a weapon on school grounds, a felony, and second-degree breach of peace, a misdemeanor.

She was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby June 4, Bango said.

Shelton Schools Superintendent Christopher Clouet said in a prepared statement that All students at Shelton High School are safe.”

This morning, it was brought to the attention of the high school administration that a student might be in possession of a weapon,” Clouet said.

Clouet said Shelton High School Headmaster Beth Smith went to the student’s classroom with a security guard and two police officers.

The student was immediately removed from the room and police took possession of her backpack,” Clouet said. She was brought to an office where a BB gun was found in her possession.”
