Ansonia is sometimes referred to as “Title Town” because of its record winning state championships in football, according to Board of Aldermen President Eugene Sharkey.
Now add Ansonia cheerleaders to that tradition.
Two squads from the city’s United Youth Football League took home first-place trophies in their divisions at a national cheerleading competition in Florida earlier this month.
United Youth Football League is similar to Pop Warner. Click here for more information.
The Ansonia United 12 (cheerleaders ages 10 to 12) and the United 14 (cheerleaders ages 11 to 14) each won in their divisions.
The squads, and other cheerleaders from Ansonia, received a warm welcome from city and state officials Tuesday, at the Board of Aldermen meeting.
“We have a tradition. It seems when we enter something, we win,” Sharkey said. “As recently as our football team, and I know going back to even when I was in school, it was always a winning town. Some people call us ‘Title Town’ and the tradition continues.”
Ansonia High School won the state football championship last weekend.
State Rep. Linda Gentile handed out proclamations to the members of each squad.
“Your enthusiasm for the sport of cheerleading has been shown through your hard work and dedication,” Gentile read. “You have displayed great team work and spirit throughout this competition and have made the state of Connecticut proud.”
The cheerleaders from each squad then posed for photos with Gentile and Mayor James Della Volpe.
