Here is the first video dispatch from the group. It was sent to the Valley Indy Friday night, July 29:
Departing on July 30 the group will fly to Los Angeles, visit Disneyland and begin a camping and hiking tour of Big Sur, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Redwood National Park, Mt. St. Helens National Monument, Mount Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park.
They will end in Seattle after traveling more than 2,000 miles via three 13 passenger vans.
Here’s a shot of the group training on the Paugassett Trail. Article continues after the photo.
Troop 3 Scoutmaster Randy Ritter, who is coordinating the event, said that the group has been working for more than a year on the logistics, fundraising and physical fitness required for the wilderness adventure. The group will meet one last time, 6 p.m. on July 29 at the Derby Second Congregational Church for an equipment shakedown and gear inspection before departing at 3:30 a.m. for JFK Airport.
Participating Troop 3 scouts include Steven Tracz, Billy Kowarik, Ryan Cafaro, Larry Cafaro, Dylan Krystopowicz, Brian Welch, Adam Sroka, Matt Edwards, Josh Moscato, Colby McLiverty, Alex Oppel, Justin Patten, Matt Moran, Mike Neuendorf, Jim Butler, Mike Shea, Dominic Livoti, Andrew Devine, Jake Grasso and Caine Jimmo.
The group will have an international element with the inclusion of Limerick, Ireland leader Richie Hayes and Scouts Aidan Long and James Daly as well as Peterborough, England Scouts Jack Tibbett and James Blount. The international scouting exchange program is made possible through Troop 3 alumnus, Dr. Robert Feeney.
In addition to Ritter and Hayes leaders include Bill McDonnell, John Spinetti, Chris Cafaro, Joe Patten, Christine Jalowiec, Cindy Tracz, Deb Oppel, Steven Ng and Brian Spinetti.
Troop 3 has a history of high adventure experiences having in the past 15 years visited Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, BSA Seabase in the Florida Keys, Europe, the United Kingdom & Ireland and Alaska.

Be safe and have fun boys. Adventure you’ll remember your entire lives.
Thanks to Randy and the other adult leaders for making it happen, and being positive role models.

Hooray for Troop 3! It never ceases to amaze me what a fantastic job Randy Ritter and his fellow Scout leaders continue to do working with the boys. Just look at that incredible agenda of sight-seeing attractions. Plus, this time around, they’ve got the “luck o’the Irish” tagging along on their venture out West. Incredible!
Safe travels, men.
