Valley NAACP President: Woodbridge Democrat Should ‘Publicly, Sincerely’ Apologize

FILEValley NAACP President Greg Johnson Sr. sent the following letter to the Valley Indy after a Woodbridge Democrat referred to state Sen. George Logan as a token black Republican” in a Facebook comment.

It’s a sad day in Woodbridge when a Democrat not only attempts to use race to divide, but belittles a strong man of color in the process. Her comment were disrespectful and she needs to publicly and sincerely apologize.

I applaud Looney and Fasano on their quick responses to these disparaging remarks but the community is saying she needs to be held accountable. Members of the oldest civil rights organization (NAACP) are screaming for her to be held accountable.

Reading the dialogue that was begun by Ms. Sackler, I must say that I remain disappointed even after her luke-warm apology.

We all know that there are troubling dynamics on the national political level as it relates to a multitude of issues. To use that as an excuse to belittle, Senator Logan’s position shows me a person that appears to be out of touch with reality. Most of us are very caring human beings, and that care extends to many things, including animals, but to associate calling Senator Logan a token black republican to a frustration over animal rights is equally demeaning.

I further question if the apology” was meant to do any more than get people to back off her veterinary practice as she mentioned.

I have made this offer in the past, and I make it again. Let’s take the kid gloves off and own our parts in this ever increasing divide among race and party. You cannot continue to say that someone who is smacked in the face is not hurt if you cannot feel that smack. It’s time for open, honest dialogue that acknowledges explicit and implicit biases and works towards common, mutually respectful grounds.

Yours in the Struggle

President of Valley NAACP
Greg Johnson Sr.
