West Main Street Facelift Underway

The project — funded with a $430,000 grant — will improve sidewalks and pavement on the downtown road.

You are changing the landscape, essentially,” Sheila O’Malley, the city’s Economic Development Director, told the Economic Development Commission Thursday. You are improving the aesthetic quality of that part of town. It needed a facelift.”

The first phase of the project includes upgrades to the western side of the street, from the train station to its intersection of Bridge Street, where Ansonia Rescue Medical Services is located.

The other side of the street, which has several commercial buildings, will be part of a second phase of updates, to be paid for by bonding residents approved in November.

The work involves demolishing existing curbs and sidewalks, and installing new ones. Workers are also installing new catch basins, signs and light fixtures, O’Malley said Thursday.

The Board of Aldermen approved a bid from Edo Construction Co. Inc based in Milford, which said it could complete the work for $240,687. If the city decides to mill and pave the West Main Street parking lot, it would cost another $90,000, according to the bid documents.

O’Malley said there is no relation between the company, whose president is Julie Marini, and either Board of Aldermen member Matthew Edo or the city’s attorney, John Marini. T

Edo Construction has 120 days to complete the project, O’Malley said.

I think they’ll be done before then,” she said.
