Wheel-A-Thon Is Sunday, September 22, 2013

The 2013 CDR Wheel-A-Thon is from 9 a.m. until noon on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013.

The 2013 Center for Disability Rights Wheel-A-Thon to benefit youth with disabilities takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Savin Rock Conference Center, 5 Rock St. in West Haven.

The Wheel-A-Thon is the annual community fundraiser for the Center for Disability Rights’ youth programs geared at raising awareness of barriers in the community that prevent the inclusion of people with disabilities in the everyday life of their community.

Participants include individuals and teams that raise money by collecting donations or pledges for walking or pushing themselves in a wheelchair over a 1.5‑mile course along the West Haven shoreline. It is non-competitive, low-intensity and low-pressure. CDRs Wheel-A-Thon is mostly about having fun.

For individuals with disabilities, CDRs service area extends from Milford and runs up the Connecticut Shoreline to Old Saybrook and Old Lyme; up to Middletown and Portland, and down through Meriden to the lower Naugatuck Valley.

Wheel-A-Thon participants and sponsors raised about $16,000 in 2012. One individual and a Wheel-A-Thon participant raised a total of $576. All money raised last year went to scholarships for students with disabilities and CDRs Shoreline/EstuaryYouth Transition Project (SEYTP). Currently, there are 17 young adults participating in SEYTP and the Greater New Haven YTP.

CDR is looking for individuals who can support or participate in the Wheel-A-Thon with a $25 donation. For information, call Chris or Dana at (203) 934‑7077, Ext. 10, or visit the Wheel-A-Thon web site at www.wheel-a-thon.org for more information on registering, sponsoring and participating.
