Woman Falls Off Bridge In Derby

A young woman was hurt after falling off a railroad bridge in Derby Thursday afternoon.

Her name was not available. She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital complaining of pain to her head, neck and back.

At about 3:30 p.m., crews from Derby Storm Ambulance were sent to a railroad bridge over the Naugatuck River near Smoke House BBQ at 1 New Haven Ave.

Derby Fire Department Assistant Chief David Lenart said the woman, possibly in her teens, had been walking on the train tracks with a friend when she slipped and fell through the tracks.

Lenart estimated she fell some 15 feet onto a supporting structure below.

Firefighters had to carefully make their way to where she was stuck, because the path to the structure was extremely narrow.

Lenart said the woman was fortunate the water level was low at the time she fell. Had it been higher she would have fallen into the water in an injured state, Lenart said.

Because it was low tide, she landed on an exposed pylon at the foot of the bridge,” Lenart said.

As crews loaded the woman from the bridge structure onto a stretcher, rescue” swimmers were positioned nearby in case anything went wrong.
