Employees at Xpect Discounts on Derby’s Pershing Drive were told last week the store will be closing in April.
Fifty eight people will lose their jobs, according to a notification provided to the state’s Labor Department by Marc Glassman, Inc., the Ohio-based company that owns Xpect Discounts.

The layoffs are slated to start around April 7.
There are six Xpect Discounts in Connecticut.
Xpect Discounts is in Red Raider Plaza at 60 Pershing Drive. Walgreens has plans pending to partially tear down the building where Xpect sits and rebuild the aging plaza to include a 14,500 square foot Walgreens.
The other tenants — Town Squire Diner, Radio Shack, Crown Fried Chicken, Suds Laundromat and N&S Smoke Junction — are expected to remain in business as the plaza redevelops.
Red Raider Plaza saw a number of storefronts become vacant in 2009 and 2010, but the gaps started to close in 2011 with new businesses.
Walgreens wants to start construction in 2013 and be finished by 2014. Click here to read a previous story.
The properties next to Raider Plaza on Pershing Drive are also going through a transition.
Pershing Partners, LLC owns the former Valley Bowl. The LLC’s principal partner is Jerry Nocerino, of Nocerino Construction in New Haven.
The company has not filed plans for what it plans to do with the old Valley Bowl portion of the property.
The company tore down an old movie theater within the last few months.
Italian Pavilion, a popular restaurant, moved down the road to the former Brickhouse Restaurant.

It will be sad to see Xpect go. I love that store. But are the rumors true? It’s being said that in addition to Walgreens, we’ll be getting an Aldi’s, an Olive Garden and possibly a Five Guys. That would definitely make up for the loss of Xpect and creat a ton more jobs.

I for one hate the thought of Xpect closing. I live in Oxford, but my Mom is in Derby and I always got there to get her bread, OJ, english muffins, sandwich meats, etc. Now I will be forced to go to Shoprite, Big Y or Stop&Shop;. Hate having to go there for a few items. Takes forever to get out. To bad Xpect couldn’t relocate close by. It will be greatly missed

Yes, it seems that no matter how much business a chain does in the Valley, sooner or later it will close its Valley location. I’m tired of having to go to Milford for everything! Staples in Derby (there is still one in Shelton, but who knows how long that will stay), Boston Market in Shelton, KMart in Derby. I remember when we had two Friendly’s, one in Ansonia and one in Derby. Now where do we go? Milford. So Xpect is joining the list. If you’re wondering what businesses we’re going to lose next, just look to see which ones also have Milford locations.
