A federal judge has denied a former Seymour lawyer’s bid to be released from prison while he appeals a money laundering conviction.
Ralph Crozier, 63, has been imprisoned at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey since April on a 30-month prison sentence after he was found guilty of hiding $41,000 in drug money for a former client, Bruce Yazdzik.

A former Seymour lawyer convicted of laundering drug money last year is asking a federal judge to let him out of prison while he appeals the case.

Few people would be smiling while leaving a federal courthouse minutes after being sentenced to more than two years in prison.
But few people are like Ralph Crozier, the self-described “maverick” attorney from Seymour who a jury convicted of laundering drug money last September.
Though federal sentencing guidelines in the case advised Chief U.S. District Court Judge Janet C. Hall to send Crozier to prison for at least 87 months, the judge handed down a 30-month term after an emotional, three-hour sentencing at federal court in New Haven.
Minutes after tearfully pleading with Judge Hall for lenience, Crozier, given eight weeks to surrender to federal custody, grinned as he emerged from the courthouse doors and hugged several of his friends and family, then clasped his hands together in prayer as he made his way down the front steps toward Church Street.

It was Seymour lawyer Ralph Crozier’s own words that now have him facing up to 40 years behind bars.
On Thursday a jury of eight men and four women found Crozier guilty of money laundering charges after a five-day trial at U.S. District Court in New Haven.
Afterward, the jury’s foreman said it was a concession Crozier made from the witness stand — that he knew a former client had been “dabbling” in selling prescription painkillers — that convinced jurors to vote guilty.
“There were times when he was his own worst enemy,” the foreman, Dan Delisle, of Cromwell, said outside the courthouse.

A 12-person jury found Seymour lawyer Ralph Crozier guilty of money laundering charges Wednesday at U.S. District Court in New Haven.
Crozier faces a possible 40-year prison sentence.
He was found guilty of two separate criminal charges — conspiracy to launder money and attempted money laundering.
The jury delivered its verdict after deliberating Wednesday and Thursday in the wake of a five-day trial before Chief U.S. District Judge Janet Hall.
Sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 18. The judge ordered Crozier not to take on new clients and to wrap up his law practice before that date.

But never in a case that could see him sent to prison for up to four decades himself.
After a day of deliberations in his money laundering trial came and went without a verdict Wednesday, Crozier said outside the courthouse he wasn’t reading too much into the day’s developments — and is taking solace in the poetry of Rudyard Kipling.

The dueling pictures of Crozier — emerging over the past five days of his trial on money laundering charges in U.S. District Court in New Haven — crystallized Tuesday in closing arguments by lawyers on both sides of the case.
The jury’s verdict could see Crozier walk out of U.S. District Court a free man or face up to 40 years in federal prison.

Seymour lawyer Ralph Crozier spent the fourth day of his trial on federal money laundering charges telling jurors Bruce Yazdzik, a former client who testified last week that Crozier agreed to launder $30,000 in drug money for him, was lying.
But a federal prosecutor launched a blistering attack on the lawyer’s credibility, picking apart portions of Crozier’s earlier testimony and accusing him of everything from sloppy bookkeeping to doing cocaine with Yazdzik’s sister.
Then Crozier walked out of U.S. District Court in New Haven and said he hopes members of the jury “understand the truth.”

A Seymour lawyer accused of trying to launder $30,000 of a client’s drug money said Wednesday he will take the stand in his own defense.
The lawyer, Ralph Crozier, said he has nothing to hide. The comments come after the second day of a trial at U.S. District Court in New Haven during which a parade of government witnesses have testified to just the opposite.
Prosecutors on Wednesday elicited testimony suggesting Crozier’s misdeeds ran far afield of just money laundering, the sole crime with which he’s charged.
But the jury also heard Crozier’s attorney exact a handful of damaging concessions — including the government’s star witness admitting he’d lie to get out of jail early.
